The American Sustainable Business Council aims to build a more just, diverse, equitable, and inclusive economy. We cannot afford for the small businesses that support our communities throughout the U.S. to flounder during this pandemic. In order to do so, small businesses support and funding needs to be distributed more equitably, as outlined in the Saving Our Streets act proposed by Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) and Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (D-MA). Investing in businesses owned by individuals from underrepresented communities not only helps these business owners but helps to build a more robust and resilient economy for everyone.

Subject: As a Business Leader I Support the Saving Our Streets Act!

Message:

Dear Member of Congress:

We cannot allow racism to persist. Congress must act now to address systemic racism and inequities and a good next step is passage of the Saving Our Streets (SOS) act, which has been endorsed by the American Sustainable Business Council (ASBC), representing over 200,000 responsible businesses like mine.

While previous funding relief efforts have provided relief to some businesses, these acts have proven to be insufficient because we continue to see that businesses owned by African Americans and other People of Color and businesses in under-served communities are being consistently left out of funding. Especially in this moment where the urgency for racial justice is so profound, this reality is inexcusable.

The SOS act, proposed by Senator Kamala Harris and Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley, aims to bolster businesses owned by People of Color, by veterans, by women and by other communities who are far too often excluded from loans and other opportunities for federal relief funding.

As a business leader, I and my fellow members of ASBC know that it is crucial to support small businesses during the pandemic, and it is especially vital to approach such support with the goals of inclusivity and equity. The SOS act does just that. We urge you to support this new policy initiative.

Policymaking has too often excluded People of Color from its benefits. The SOS act directly addresses and aims to alleviate this form of systemic racism by beginning with small business relief. Supporting this initiative is one important way to show support and solidarity with Black constituents, as well as with the millions of Americans who have faced discrimination and who stand in solidarity with marginalized groups. Signing on to this act is a step forward in promoting broader racial and social equity.
